Rockstarz's Nelson Mandela Day 67 Minutes 2012 Experience

Rockstarz’ 67 Minutes 2011

Last year Rockstarz collaborated with the Kanala Initiative with a huge Nelson Mandela 67 Minutes production of games, a concert, ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ drum majorettes and band along the streets of Lenasia, food, fruit and juice distribution and a lot more. It was a day well spent with youngsters from various orphanages, schools and communities from some of the townships in the South of Johannesburg.

Rockstarz’ 67 Minutes 2012

With Rockstarz being in the very early stages of setup in Cape Town, it was well suited to partner with another initiative for this year’s event, here is how it all went…
Kyra (9), Morgan (7) and Liam (4) Alcock decided to have a car wash fundraising initiative so that they could utilize all the funds that they raise to do something for a group of children that were in need as part of their 67 Minutes for 2012. Tammy spread the word and the initial uptake to this idea was pretty good but with Cape Town’s wet winter, the actual implementation was a bit challenging. Albeit, with the support of friends and family the kids were able to raise R1300!
Plans got underway to coordinate the different offerings to the community of an informal settlement in Maitland that was identified by Tippy Toes Foundation as one of their sites that needed assistance. The end offering was ‘carved up’ as follows:

Warm clothes and toys for the children and babies of the community – these were bought by the Alcock kids and donated by the staff of GET;

 Warm clothes parcels for each member of the 12 families of the community – these were also generously donated by the staff of GET and Phil for Two Oceans restaurant;

 Personal care parcels for the young ladies in the community

 Food parcels for each family purchased with a generous donation from Global Edge Technologies (GET) and

 Warm, big and fluffy blankets for each family donated by Rockstarz Foundation to keep the cold at bay for each family.

The night before and morning of the event were spent sorting through all the items bought and donated and packaging them neatly into family packs and ensuring that the contents of the packs were evenly distributed and sufficient for the sizes of each family. We braved the battering rain and when we arrived, we found that Angelo and Gary (community members) had put up a structure to protect everyone from the rain!!

Without boring you with how much fun we all had and how happy and excited the community was, I’ll just tell you how fulfilling it was for everyone to see the smiles on those 36 people, how amazing to see my male colleagues and their children playing soccer with the community’s children was, how we all rallied together to make this event a success and finally, how we made plans to go back and extend more sustainable assistance to those beautiful souls.

Rockstarz’ 67 Minutes 2013 and beyond

The experiences of partnering with other 67 Minutes specific initiatives has been good for Rockstarz as it fulfills one of our objectives to partner with like minded organizations and/or individuals; and the lessons learnt in these partnerships stand us in good stead to start preparations now for a fully Rockstarz driven event from next year. We are so excited to start already and with all of your continued support, more and more good work in our country’s most vulnerable communities is possible.

Love,

N.

2011 - The year that was for Rockstarz Foundation

Hello Rockstarz,

As we go full steam ahead into 2012, I'd like to reflect a while on the year that 2012 was for Rockstarz Foundation, particularly the seconds half.

Matriculants 2011
I am happy to tell you that Rockstarz officially has 2 beneficiaries who passed Grade 12 in 2011!! This is a huge feat for the young ladies whose future (in a way) has just began. One wants to study Biochemistry and the other Business Management. Both of them were unfortunately unable to get into University so they will attend forms of bridging courses while we work feverently in the background to secure them bursaries and spaces for next year.I appeal to you to send me information on organisations that may be able to assist to make tertiary education possible for these young ladies (info@rockstarzfoundation.org.za).

Gauteng Photoshoot and Home Visits
We had such a wonderful day with 9 of the 11 beneficiaries in Gauteng on weekend in November when we asked them all to avail themselves for the first official Rockstarz photoshoot! It was a beautiful, albeit hot, day of endless posing, lunch and bonding. After the exciting photo session and lunch, we sat around in a circle and chatted and discussed out of school activities for 2012 - the ideas ranged from simple to outlandish and ambitious but completely fun, the best part is that they came from the kids themselves :). We were having so much fun, we could've stayed there the whole weekend, alas, there were home visits to be done for each of them. A couple of tears were shed but there were enough hugs to go around to soothe all our frayed emotions :)
None of this would have been possible without Phumla, my friend and fellow Managing Member, she made several trips carting everybody around in 1 car and was on hand from planning stages to make it all a success.
Oh my, my absolute hero is Sean Conco who stepped up to the plate and truly made the day possible by agreeing to donate his photography skills. He beared the blazing sun and took amazing photos (see accompanying group photo). And to top it all off, he took to the kids like he had known them forever, and I think the feeling was mutual with them :). Thank you Sean, you're a Rockstar!!

Global Edge Technologies
I started work for an organisation with amazing people who run a Casual day capaign once a month throughout the year, when staff are encouraged to dress casully on a Friday and they are encouraged to make donations into a collection box. The purpose of this campaign is to reconcile the donations at the end of the year and make generous contributions to selected charities, which in most cases, are nominated by the staff members themselves. Rockstarz Foundation was blessed to be one of two of the charities chosen to be recipients of GET's Casual Day proceeds! A huge thank you to Lynn, Tammy, the PSAs and all GET staff for their unprecedented generosity, may you all be blessed always and continue to support Rockstarz Foundation.

The Lesley's
This is a special family indeed and for all the support that they have demonstrated and pledged to continue, they deserve a special mention.
I went out to dinner with my lady colleagues one evening and Rockstarz somehow came up in conversation, I ended up animatedly chatting about it and I guess someone was listening, ha ha! Carole went home that evening and shared with her husband Andy, a couple of weeks (or was it days)later, I got the great news that they believed in Rockstarz so much that they would lend their financial support. As usual, people's generosity always leaves me gob-smacked and this was no exception!
Thank you very much to the Lesley's, Rockstarz are the true beneficiaries of your stay in South Africa.

Rockstarz Foundation Cape Town
Rockstarz Cape Town seems to may become a possibility for 2012. If all's fair in the world, God will make it possible for Rockstarz to expand. I will keep you posted on progress on this matter.

Thank you all for reading this blog and for your continued support. As rockstarz continues to grow, your support in building awareness for the initiative becomes crucial so please continue to talk about us to your networks.

2012 has started off with a bang .... but that's for the next blog :)

Luv,

N.

Blessings

Wow, it's been a minute! They say we must count our blessings and be thankful all the time, and because I haven't updated you in a while, there a few of them, so here goes:

New KZN Beneficiaries
6 high school beneficiaries joined the Rockstarz family mid 2010. What's special about these children is that they are the first group from Durban, KZN! With the help of Phyllis and Sizile in Durban we were able to fully kit them with their orange and navy school uniform in June 2010. Their next uniform distribution is due and will happen by the first week of August.

New Gauteng Beneficiaries
5 high school beneficiaries joined the Rockstarz family late 2010 and I am glad to report that they have settled in quite well. 2 Grade 11 boys; poles apart in personality and ambition but a delight nonetheless. 3 girls, 2 in grade 12 and 1 in grade 11.

Belated Thank You's

I believe it's never too late to show appreciation to people who have made a difference in my life so these Thank You's come from a very appreciative place for all the assistance that I have recieved from good people in the setting up of RF.

Naseema - all your work in the registration and legalising of RF right at the beginning.

Thabiso - for taking RF on as our Auditor when all you had was my excitement. And for the first financials this year and the many more to come :).

Jehslo - for the first website, which was simple, professional yet captured all I wanted at the time. Thanks dude!

Simba - for the first financial contribution. I was deliriously excited for days!! You made me believe that there were thousands of people out there willing to lend a hand.

Petra - for the extension of our online footprint :).

RF Team - for all the running around, for your time, for your support, for your financial support and for all the running around still to happen :).

The Principals and Teachers of Masakhane Primary School and Cato Manor High School - for the invaluable contribution in identifying the right beneficiaries for RF and the continued support.

Steven and Pastel - for the finacial contribution and for all the effort that went into the Easter Egg-citement drive for our beneficiaries and their classmates!! The looks on their faces when they saw all those boxes of sweets were priceless.

RF is a work-in-progress kind of project and as long as there are children in need out there, they'll always be a need for your help and assistance so please don't tire and may the Lord bless you all.
